Lender Processing Services Inc. has reached a $120 million settlement with Ohio and 45 other states. Complaints filed in the case have been resolved due to the company’s rush to submit falsified documents with the courts. LPS, Inc. has 20 major offices countrywide, one of which is located in Ohio.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office has stated that “The practice of robo-signing,” which involves pushing through fabricated documents, has caused significant damage to many Ohioans during the housing crisis when buyers were sold mortgages that they could not sustain payments.”
Ohio will get $2.54 million of the settlement. The state has stated that the funds will be used to help Ohio consumers at risk of foreclosure. The claims arose out of 2008 – 2010 foreclosures in Ohio (14th highest among the states.)
The settlement also requires that the company and it’s attorneys properly process the paperwork necessary to file the Complaints and prohibits rewarding it’s attorneys by how quickly they process the documents.
In a statement put out by the company CEO states that “Today’s settlements are another major step toward putting issues related to past business practices behind us.”
